PVC membranes shaped as white cloud - a landmark during the World Youth Day in Cologne
Under a white roof Pope Benedict celebrated an open-air mass attended by more than a million young people at the Marienfeld near the city of Cologne, Germany. The roof was made of PVC coated membranes, produced by Verseidag, Krefeld, Germany.
The construction is another example for the outstanding quality of PVC products. Flexible and transparent membranes give designers freedom to realize unusual ideas. In this case the membrane did not only serve as a shelter against rain and storm but also formed a visual symbol of the World Youth Day especially due to the illumination at night during the “Vigil” celebration.
The outstanding role of flexible PVC membranes can also be seen in the constructions of the football stadiums for the World Championship 2006 in Stuttgart, Hamburg and Wolfsburg. In the Frankfurt stadium PVC membranes form a movable roof which allows to use the stadium also for concerts and other events.
