The European Commission is sponsoring the “Mobile Museums“ project within the framework of the “Culture 2000” project. We asked several artists to state their opinions in this regard:
“Most museums are characterised by a fixed location. By contrast, the idea of the mobile museum is to give new life to locations already known for their cultural implications through the temporary appearance of the mobile museum, changing the structures and atmosphere of each new location. The excitement and sensitisation of perception are not only experienced in the mobile museum, but serve to create a consciousness for one’s surroundings as well. In this way, the aesthetic experiences change and broaden the usual image of specific parts of the city.
“… Any artist can now build his own individual museum, with a maximum capacity of 10 cubic metres, using modular building materials of recycled PVC sheets (Kömacel). This modular method of construction creates a spatial structure which can be walked upon, forming an independent unit both inside and out.”
The exhibition is running in Berlin from 19 to 30 March, in Vienna from 5 April to 2 May, and in Barcelona throughout May 2004.
Active sponsors, in addition to PVCplus, include the PVC processing firms Profine GmbH and Armstrong. For further details, please see www.mobilemuseen.de.
