In December 2001, the Solvay management in Brussels approved 34 million Euros for the construction of a membrane electrolysis unit. The new unit is to replace part of the existing diaphragm installation. The new membrane electrolysis unit will cut electricity consumption while simultaneously improving the quality of the sodium hydroxide.

The work is scheduled for completion in April 2004, so that the new installation will be officially inaugurated in May.
